1/16 - Patterns have obviously changed, Weakfish too.

Had John & his son Chase aboard today, from Georgia. We hit it really early and the tide ran forever, with a low tide at 7am at the jetties we had current till damn near 10am!

There's three kinds of Trout fishing days around here.
1. Not a lot of fish, but the ones caught were all big Gators.
2. Numerous Trout, but not any with Gator status.
3. Worked your ass off, "Is there actually Trout around here?" because you never caught any.

Today was a number 2.

What I mean by the title of this report is that it's now two winters at least and the Jetty Trout seem to be scarce. Compared to years past.  Being a winter of not really any cold weather, it maybe that there's been a shift. I am getting more in the river, but less at the jetties.

The Standard rule if there is one for me has always been;

Trout further from the inlets in the summer, and closer to inlets in the winter. Don't really feel that I'd get an argument with that statement. So, when you don't really have a winter?  Well, that's my theory.

The big Bull Redbass seem to really thin out years ago by the 2nd week in November, leaving a few here and there in the river. Well,  I believe last month people were still catching them like it was the end of October.

The "Yellowmpouth Trout", aka: real name "Weakfish". Back when Speckled Trout were closed in Feb. That's all we could put in the cooler during Feb.  And we'd catch 2 to 4 pounders no problem at the jetties. Float-rig, Jig-n-shrimp, bottom fishing. It didn't matter.

Now and the last few years, these fish all but have about vanished.....And not a soul even mentions it.
They were a steady, main stay at the jetties not only in Feb. But all winter right thru Spring.

5 Pounders and up! My largest was a 7.5 pounder that ate a MirrOlure 5200MR in shocking Fluorescent Yellow with a Fluorescent red head.  I thought the fish was a 30 inch Redfish the way it fought.

Boy, do I miss those days. The Good ole days?

TODAY 1/16 we worked hard for any Jetty Trout, real hard. All the while I never saw a single boat around us....."All sheepshead fishing" as usual, even catch a fish!  We had a 22" Red, and a Sheepshead as bonus fish today along with our hard earned jetty Specks. And NOT a single Weakfish.

Over all today's catch was still very good.

15 Speckled Trout to 19".  2 - 3 pound Sheepshead, a 14" Flounder, a Croaker worth keeping, a 22" Redfish...and I'm pleased to say not a single Pinfish or 4" Mangrove Snapper.

I could almost used a larger fish box!

MID-DAY NET FULL...had to pull trout and give a count.

I can tell ya it took me over a hour to clean all we had.  Didn't go nuts with photos or video today. Just didn't have it in me.

But, as it looked like rain at 1:30pm we packed it in and headed back. All I had my crew do today was Float-rig fish. It's all we needed to do!

But still, things still aren't the way they used to be, which has me pining for the "ole days".

The City of Jacksonville with the support of the Florida Inland Navigation District is creating a Maritime Management Plan. A Team from the Northeast Florida Regional Council, University of North Florida and Jacksonville University will be gathering information about water access facilities and the needs and desires of the community, so that we have a plan to guide us as we maintain facilities, plan for unmet needs and ensure that the important role that water access plays in our economy and our quality of life remains strong for the long term.
We need your help to get the word out to your friends and neighbors so they can tell us what they think about our waterways. Take the survey! It is at JAXBOATPLAN.COM. That website is also the place to look for information related to the plan and upcoming public meetings.
Your input is important as we prepare for a vibrant future for our waterways and our community. Take the survey, learn more about the plan and how you can get involved at JAXBOATPLAN.COM.

1/12 - What a beautiful day!!!!!!

and of course, I WASN'T OUT THERE!!!!!!

I tell people ll the time.

"I specialize in fishing under the harshest conditions. IE: Full & New Moons, with gale force due East of West winds. Bitter cold record chill days, 6 foot seas on a July afternoon in 99 degree heat with lightning and blinding rain.....because I don't get to pick my days.

Instead of fishing on this glorious day.

I went and got a new anchor to replace yesterdays lost one.
Spent the $201.50 buying my customers their "fishing licenses".
I have to buy the fishing license for the boat in this state.
While every other state customers have to buy their own fishing license.

THEN,  I CLEANED UP A BUNCH OF FISH FROM SUNDAY, STOKED UP THE FRYER, POPPED OPEN A FEW "xtra strong" NEW CASTLE BEERS.

SEASONED THE FILLETS AFTER THE OIL BATH WITH SOME CREOLE SEASONING, AND HAD ME A PIG FEST, EATING FRESH FRIED TROUT, FLOUNDER & SHEEPSHEAD,.......

THEN PASSED OUT IN MY LAZY BOY FOR TWO HOURS BECAUSE THE 4 BEERS I CHUGGED WERE SO DAMN STRONG, THEY KNOCKED ME OUT!

c'c'mon, let's git you some!

1/11 - BBBBB'Brutal CCCCC' Cold !

Is it that because it's been 80 all "winter", that when it's 40 (?) it seems like a near-death experience?
Not sure if today was even 40 degrees.  Sure felt colder to us.

Had John & Javier from Texas aboard today and yeah, not sure if they were totally prepared either.

"it was a double-hood day, for me all day long!"

And I'll tell ya right now, as soon as I'm done writing this report, I'm heading over to Ebay and ordering me several pairs of the best WATER-PROOF gloves I can get.

That pulling the cold wet anchor line is a killer!  (more about the anchor coming....)

We started out Float-rig fishing and there really wasn't much if anything to it at all. nothing but scourge fish (Blues) eating our baits.

Ended up at the jetties and it was damn nice out there. So we bottom fished.

MY DAIWA SHRAPNEL..."I've never even caught a big fish on it yet!!!"

SELFIES...John, two drum and I,

9 & 12 pounds

CAPTAIN MORGAN, and his Pirate bootie!

I'd just as soon bottom fish the jetties right now versus float-rig fish. I'm getting a bit burnt out on the Trout one day, no Trout another thing. It just may not be a good Trout year. Maybe come March & April?

PROBLEM WITH BOTTOM FISHING THE JETTIES IS THAT THERE ALWAYS THE RISK OF LOOSING AN ANCHOR.

YEP, WENT TO PULL MY $95.00 "REEF & ROCK" ANCHOR AND IT WAS SO JAMMED, THE CHAIN WOULDN'T EVEN BUDGE.

THAT'S THE SECOND ANCHOR IN A FEW MONTHS, LOST TO THE SAME AREA.

I NOW HAVE (5) OVER ALL, IN THE SAME AREA OF THE JETTIES.  OH HOW I WISH I WAS A LOUISIANA FISHERMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1/5 - HELL YES!!! (read)

Read this article and tell me that this is just plain "common sense".

READ and share this article:

Workman wants FWC to stop hassling boaters     <LINK HERE>

Here's an example, of ME minding my own business, fishing and waited for the perfect time of the morning. Up at 4am, in the water by 5am all for that first light morning bite.

"I see him coming from way far away, naturally he has to come by and want to do a safety inspection at 7am and I literally have to say can't we do this another time? I'm here fishing...."

1/3 - Cold arrived nice and WET like:

Friday.....beautiful morning, the first hour or two.  Then rained all day long on and off. Jetty fished bottom fishing. Almost zero going on. With Boyd and his girl friend Debbie. She was a serious "super trooper". My kinda gal too. Never complained about the weather and just fished hard all day long.

One huge Croaker, a few large Whiting, and a large Pigfish, and a 3 foot nurse shark. That was it. The whole falling tide, and tide change.

Rained on us the whole time.  Up in the river next. Could hardly give a bait away the rest of the day.
By days end it was freezing cold, and really WET.

Saturday,  The boys from Glousta'. No rain. but CCCCCold.  TROUT on one spot, and a ton of bait thieves in the 68-69 degree batch tube warm water , for this time of year.

With on Cold day per month since November, it's not like the water temp is down. The water Temp is HIGH for now about 8 degrees HIGHER than it should be. And thats why the bait stealers are so ravenous.   Can't get to the Trout for all the bait stealers between us and them.

But we had about 5 nice Trout on Saturday:

And every where else we picked and poked around catching a bunch of small ones. It's tough for anything with all this weather swings. Hot, then cold, then cold and rain. Typical late Dec. & early Jan????  NO not really.

Sunday, rain all morning. Cancelled at the boat ramp. Had three guys in from Pa. for the Tax Slayer Bowl game and fishing in the rain was not what they were prepared for. And I'm sure it would have been a tough day to catch anything, any how.

So there ya have it. My New years weekend.

----------------------------------------------------

I float-rig fish this time of year for "ALL SPECIES"...but it targets primarily Trout.

I jig fish with live shrimp. It also catches it all, not a particular species.

I bottom fish the jetties usually with jumbo dead shrimp, and it doesn't target any particular species, it catches it all.

Your day is one out of 365....remember that.  It's just fishing. Not a trip to the fish market or grocery store where we just pick out the species you want.  This is NE Florida, that's how it rolls, this time of year.

Already had a call this week for Yellowfin and Bluefin Tuna fishing....."I said "WHAT KINDA FISHING??"  I thought it was a crank caller.  Someone didn't have a clue of where I'm at or what I do.

Already had a call for going Dolphin fishing "Mahi Mahi"....Another caller who had no clue where he's calling or who he's calling.

Call, after checking these reports, visiting my website, and ask to "Go fishing".  Believe me, I'll do my best to have us catching, INSHORE SALTWATER SPECIES OF FISH, in NE Florida.  Not offshore, not Gulf Stream, not Bluewater Trolling.  Just inshore light tackle fishing, where it's NO LONG BOAT RIDE, which means; "Fish more Ride Less."

1/2 - NEW ROCKS......

" Supposedly".

Starting in January.  The changes to the Little Jetties area.  Eventually 'MORE ROCK"...and new fishing spots??
